One student died on the spot on Monday night with 10 other students of Chavakali High seriously injured after an Easy Coach bus ferrying the students to Nairobi overturned at Mamboleo in Kisumu city county.
“I want to confirm that we lost one student of Chavakali Boys from the accident. My officers have been dispatched to different hospitals to ascertain the real number of injured students,” said Mr Mwangi
The incident occurred on Monday night, as the bus was travelling from Chavakali Boys to Nairobi after the school closed for first term holidays.
Those injured were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referrel hospital for treatment.
Nyanza regional traffic boss Allan Mwangi confirmed the incident.
“I want to confirm that we lost one student of Chavakali Boys from the accident. My officers have been dispatched to different hospitals to ascertain the real number of injured students,” said Mr Mwangi
Easy Coach Ltd management has also confirmed the accident via social media in a Facebook post.
However, Kenyans warned the company to limit the speed of there buses especially the new Mercedes Benz fleet which they said ‘the drivers drive them carelessly,”
Sabatia MP Clement Sloya said ‘it’s disheartening to learn about the recent accident involving an Easy Coach bus transporting students from Chevakali Boys High School at Mamboleo in Kisumu’
” The students had closed and were enroute from School as usual to join their parents in Nairobi when the tragedy occurred. I stand with the families of the affected students in prayer. May God comfort them during this difficult moment of trying to come to terms with the same,” said Mr Sloya
Sloya noted that ‘the frequency of accidents on our roads, particularly those affecting schools’ was on the rise saying ‘ is a matter of grave concern’
“In my view, this incidents often stem from a combination of factors such as subpar road infrastructure, insufficient maintenance, inadequate signage, and human negligence like speeding or reckless driving,” Sloya said
“To mitigate such tragedies, it is imperative for educational institutions and transportation entities to prioritize stringent safety protocols, including regular vehicle upkeep, comprehensive driver training, and strict adherence to traffic regulations,” he added
