The Upgrading of Eregi Teachers Training College to Eregi Catholic University is underway, with the submission of the transition task force report to the University.
On behalf of Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa, Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, presented the proposed Eregi Catholic University report to the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Charles Mutai, at his office .
” As a University, we are willing to mentor Eregi Campus,until it becomes fully pledged University as we have done before to Kibabii and Kaimosi Universities” Prof. Mutai asserted.
The report has proposals and recommendations for the Upgrading of Eregi Teachers Training College to constituent campus of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Eregi Catholic University.
Eregi Catholic University is proposed to be seatlite college School of Education for Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
The idea was mooted by residents of Ikolomani Sub-County through the area Member of Parliament Hon. Benard Shinali.
Shinali presented the Proposal to President William Ruto during his visit in February 2024 at the Kakamega State Lodge.
The President, directed University Education Principal Secretary to spearhead the initiative.
University Director Quality Assurance Prof.Lilechi Barasa has indicated that Eregi Teachers Training college is at about 70per cent ,in terms of required infrastructure to become a University. With the 30 per cent accessed to be for renovation.
VC Prof. Charles Mutai has committed to submit the report to the University Council for adoption waiting approval from the Commission of University Education.

Prof. Mutai noted the huge enrollment at the University at the school of Education of about 3000 first year students ,September 2024 .
“Eregi Catholic University will help address the high intake of students, witnessed at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology” – Prof. Mutai said .
Hon. Savula said its timely to for the Upgrading of the Eregi Teachers Training College as it will stimulate economic growth and open up the area.
Further DG, asked the University to hasten the adoption of the report as it has to be handed over to the President in May 2024 during his county visit.
Deputy Governor who co- chairs the task force with the Vice Chancellor ,has exuded confidence and commitment of the county government led by Governor Barasa to operationalise the University.
Prof. Kubasu Kwashe, Dr. Bonface Mudi and Stanslaus Muteshi were also present.
