Top candidates want to pursue Medicine and Engineering

Kakamega County was thrust into the national limelight after students from the county emerged as the best candidates nationally in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

The exams were released by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Wednesday.

And now three students from the county who scored straight A’s have chosen Medicine and Engineering as their dream career courses.

They are Tony Wabuko,18, (Kapsabet Boys), the best student in the country, Michelle Ambunya (Kenya High) and Frankline Wanyama (Maranda Boys).

Wabuko scored an A plain of 87.159 points, Wanyama scored an A plain of 82 points whereas Ms Michelle and scored an A plain of 81 points.

Wabuko who hails from Mumias East Sub County wants to study Medicine at the University of Nairobi same as Wanyama who wants to a neurosurgeon.

 However, for Michelle, Strathmore University or the University of Nairobi will be a better option for her from where she is pondering between taking Medicine or Engineering.

“I was confidant to be among the top 100 best candidates in the country but I didn’t imagine I will be declared the top student nationally. I want to pursue medicine, it has been my childhood dream course,” said Wabuko.

He added: “We put prayers first in everything we were doing while at Kapsabet Boys through hard work and determination. Teachers were very helpful and now we have returned Kapsabet boys, the school we know, back to the Kenyan map as an academic giant,”

Michelle on her part said they had a good working relationship with their teachers who always encouraged them to work hard which was a gateway to having a future successful life.

 “We had good teachers who understood our strengths and weaknesses. They treated us like their own children and we agreed among ourselves to perform better in this year’s KCSE exams. Our parents also supported us both financially and spiritually and we thank God for the results,” said Michelle.

According to Michelle, she has always dreamt of being the first lady Engineer from Navakholo sub county, their ancestral home, saying no human is limited and that what a man can do, a woman can do that job better.

Her mother Rosemary, said Michelle was a performer ever since she was in primary school and they expected she will get an A- minus and not a straight A. “She was very disciplined and hardworking. We invested in him a lot and he had given us joy. We will celebrate Christmas as a happy family,”

Her cousin, Abukaka who is the Personal Assistant to the Kakamega County Assembly Speaker, Morris Buluma told County Splash News that as a family they will have a conversation with Michelle so that she chooses a career course that is marketable between Medicine and Engineering.

“In this county, she is the top girl in Navakholo Sub County and we are proud of her. This is like an early Christmas for us as a family,” said Abukaka.

And Wanyama of Maranda High said he wants to study medicine so that he can emulate Education CS Prof Magoha, his role model.

Meanwhile, Kakamega High is the top school in the county with a mean score of 7.7 points followed by Booker Academy at 7.0508 points and Butere Girls had a mean of 7.452points.

Others are St Peters Boys Mumias (7.322), Mabole Boys (7.118), St Mary’s Girl’s Mumias (7.007), St Peter’s Seminary (7) and Eshibinga High (6.9635).

However, Friends School Kamusinga with a mean of 9.1608 was the best school in Western region followed by Bunyore Girls who had a mean of 8.8925 and Mudasa Academy had 8.62 points.
