Over 100 needy students set to join form one next week across Bungoma County have benefitted from Sh500,000 bursaries.
The fees assistance is courtesy of Bungoma Liberation bursary scholarships.
BL patron Zack Barasa says that he came to the rescue of the needy students after receiving overwhelming calls for his support.
Barasa said that he decided use his small resources to cater for their education.
“Am not rich but due to overwhelming calls, I decided to use the resources God has helped me with to help bright but needy students join secondary schools,” he said.
He called on other stakeholders including NGO’s, business people and individuals to come on board and rescue bright but needy children who may miss joining secondary schools due to lack of school fees.
The event took place at Bungoma Airstrip on January 11, 2020 where he faulted Bungoma county government on the recent launched governor’s scholarships.
“Majority of bright and needy students who are supposed to join secondary schools were left out while those of well to do were picked to benefit from the kitty due to nepotism and favouritism, we want this trend changed,” said Barasa.
He castigated the devolved unit for looking down upon needy students and using the scholarships to benefit their cronies.
“As Bungoma Liberation, we won’t keep quite when the money meant to benefit poor is diverted to benefit students from well to do families, this is the corruption we are fighting, let the county boss come out and defend himself,” he said.
“My daughter was almost missing out of school, I had no money for fees, I thank Barasa for coming on time, she will now be able to join his dream school which is cardinal Otunga girls, Kibabii,” said Wanjala.
His sentiments were echoed by a human rights activist Moses Lukoye who noted that the kind gesture by Mr. Barasa should be emulated by other stakeholders.
“This is the way to go, I laud Barasa for this gesture, let the beneficiaries use this opportunity to study hard and later benefit in life,” said Lukoye.
One of the guardian Patrick Wanjala said that Barasa was God sent and appreciated his kind gesture.
