Governor Barasa distributes Sh200million free farm inputs to locals

By Daniel Otieno,Kakamega

In a bold move to enhance food security and support small-scale farmers, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has launched 200 million countywide distribution of free fertilizers and maize seeds. The initiative, targeting 200,000 farmers across 12 sub-counties, prioritizes vulnerable groups such as widows, persons with disabilities, and low-income families.

“We are committed to boosting food production in Kakamega county. This can only be achieved when our farmers have an access to the necessary farm inputs,” Governor Barasa declared during the official launch in Matungu sub-county, where 1,000 farmers were the first to benefit.

Speaking at the event, the governor underscored the importance of sustainable farming and urged farmers to embrace best agricultural practices. “Food security is a shared responsibility. While we are providing these essential inputs, I encourage our farmers to apply proper farming techniques to maximize their yields. This program is part of a broader strategy to increase agricultural output, alleviate poverty, and drive economic growth in Kakamega,” he said.

Despite the promise of the initiative,it faced initial setbacks due to delay in fertilizer distribution. Governor Barasa speaking earlier in the day in Bukhungu stadium during the swearing in of new Chief Officers attributed the holdup to delays by the new Agricultural Chief Officer,Morphat Mandela, emphasizing the need for accountability in county projects. “We are now two weeks behind schedule because of administrative delays. Had the Chief Officer in charge of Agriculture,Morphat, been up to his duties our farmers would have received these inputs on time,” he remarked.

“my administration is working close with relevant authority to narrow down on those who supply fake ferilizers”

Additionally, the governor issued a stern warning to farmers to wary of unscrupulous traders selling counterfeit fertilizers. “We have seen cases in areas like Lubinu and Shianda where farmers have fallen victims to fraudsters. My administration is working closely with relevant authorities to crack down on these illegal activities and protect our famers,” he assured.

The initiative has been met with widespread appreciation from farmers across Kakamega.”This program gives us the support we need to have a successful planting season,” one beneficiary expressed.

With the distribution now in full swing, the county government remains committed to ensuring that all targeted farmers receive their inputs, reinforcing Kakamega’s position as an agricultural powerhouse as stated by the six points agenda.
