Harambee Stars have pulled out of the ongoing CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Arusha, Tanzania, to focus on preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
In a statement released by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the decision followed recommendations from the team’s technical bench led by Head Coach Benni McCarthy. The federation cited unfavourable tournament conditions that would hinder the team’s readiness for CHAN.
“This decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench, led by Head Coach Benni McCarthy, after a thorough assessment of the prevailing conditions, which were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and overall preparation,” read part of the FKF statement.
The national team had travelled to Tanzania over the weekend and was scheduled to open its campaign against hosts Tanzania on July 21 at Karatu Stadium, followed by matches against Senegal and Uganda. However, logistical setbacks, including Senegal’s delayed arrival, disrupted the match schedule.

Originally intended as a warm-up for CHAN 2024 that is set to begin on August 3 and co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the CECAFA tournament was expected to help gauge the team’s competitiveness.
Coach McCarthy had earlier named a 25 man squad mixing seasoned players with new faces, including the return of striker Masoud Juma, calling the tournament “a good test” for CHAN readiness.
Following their withdrawal, Harambee Stars are expected to return to Nairobi to resume intensive training ahead of their CHAN opener against DR Congo at Kasarani Stadium.
“The team will return to Kenya and resume preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, with full focus now shifting to ensure optimal readiness for the assignment ahead,” FKF confirmed.
FKF further assured fans of its dedication to ensuring the team is well-prepared and supported.
“FKF remains committed to providing the national team with the best possible environment to compete and represent the country with pride,” the statement concluded.
