In a bid to address the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross and the County Government of Uasin Gishu, held a media training session aimed at tackling AMR through a comprehensive One Health approach. The initiative brought together various sectors and stakeholders to raise awareness about the issue.
The training focused on sensitizing media personnel on the importance of prudent antimicrobial use and preventive measures in the fight against AMR. This comes at a time when concerns are rising about the implications of AMR on public health, as it threatens the effectiveness of common treatments and medical procedures.
Dr Paul Olale, a project officer, alongside Silah Kosgei, the Director of the Governor’s Press, highlighted the crucial role of the media in disseminating vital information on AMR.
“The initiative aims to enhance patient outcomes, reduce resistance among microorganisms, and curtail the spread of infections caused by multi-resistant organisms,” Dr. Olale stated.
He warned that if left unaddressed, AMR could lead to an era where common infections become untreatable, and routine medical procedures could carry significant risks.
Dr Olale stressed the importance of a multi-faceted approach that brings together stakeholders from different fields to effectively combat the issue. “Collaboration is key in the fight against AMR,” he added.
Mr. Kosgei echoed these sentiments, praising the partnership between the Ministry of Health, the Kenya Red Cross, and the County Government of Uasin Gishu as a model of effective cross-sectoral cooperation.
“The fight against AMR requires a coordinated effort at both the national and global levels, with countries recognizing the urgent need for collective action,” said Kosgei.
He noted that the County Government of Uasin Gishu has consistently prioritized antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and surveillance measures to mitigate the spread of resistant microorganisms.
With the media acting as a key platform for public education, the training is expected to enhance awareness and understanding of AMR within the community.
