Luanda Member of Parliament Dick Oyugi Maungu has strongly condemned the vandalism of a newly installed transformer in Mulukhambi, Ebbubayi, Wemilabi Ward, describing it as a cowardly and criminal act of sabotage.
In a press statement released on Sunday, Maungu expressed outrage over the incident, which occurred on the night of April 19 and left hundreds of residents in darkness. He revealed that the transformer’s oil was siphoned off and the equipment destroyed beyond repair.

“This despicable act has plunged hundreds of residents into darkness, undermined public safety, disrupted livelihoods, and instilled fear among law-abiding citizens,” said the MP. “Such criminal behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstance.”
Valued at Ksh 2.4 million, the transformer was installed under the legislator’s “I SEE Agenda”, specifically through the Stima Mashinani initiative aimed at extending power to rural areas to enhance security and economic empowerment. The unit was expected to supply power to between 180 and 240 households in the area.

Maungu termed the vandalism “a direct attack on the progress and well-being of our people,” and suggested that political motives may be behind the act.
“I strongly believe this is the work of our enemies, individuals who want to mix politics with development at the expense of the ordinary mwananchi. It is deeply regrettable that someone would stoop this low to derail our community’s development agenda,” he said.

Despite the setback, the MP vowed that development efforts in Luanda would continue without fear or favour. He assured the residents of Mulukhambi and the larger constituency that efforts were underway in collaboration with Kenya Power and relevant authorities to assess the damage and expedite the replacement of the transformer.
Mr Maungu also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible. “Let us not allow criminal elements to sabotage our development,” he said.
The MP concluded his statement with a call for calm and unity as the community seeks justice and continues its journey of transformation.
