The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has announced the opening of its fourth regional office in Eldoret, coinciding with a two-day conference marking Data Privacy Day 2025.
With the theme “Safeguarding Personal Data to Spur Digital Transformation and Economic Development,” the event underscored Kenya’s commitment to ensuring data privacy amid growing digital engagement.
The launch will be officiated by William Kabogo, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Digital Economy.
This new office in Eldoret joins existing regional offices in Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kisumu, with additional ODPC presence at Huduma Centres in Nyeri and Garissa, expanding accessibility to the office’s services.

In his remarks, the Data Commissioner emphasized the critical role of data privacy in Kenya’s technological growth, stating, “As our nation embraces rapid technological advancements, we must ensure that our progress is matched by a commitment to protecting personal data and building trust in the digital age. Today’s discussions are timely as they highlight the importance of digital transformation in driving economic development while safeguarding the privacy of our citizens.”
Since its establishment in 2020 under the Data Protection Act 2019, the ODPC has made notable progress, including registering over 8,000 data controllers and processors.
The office has also conducted 84 audits and inspections, resolved 6,516 out of 6,817 complaints, and issued 195 determinations and 100 enforcement notices. Furthermore, 27 cases have been resolved through Alternative Dispute Resolution.
The ODPC has developed eight sector-specific guidance notes for industries such as digital credit, communication, education, and health, aimed at streamlining data processing practices and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations.
Acknowledging the role of the media in promoting data privacy awareness, the Data Commissioner praised journalists for their efforts since the enactment of the Data Protection Act, encouraging continued collaboration in fostering responsible data management practices.
MCK CEO David Omwoyo emphasized the need for journalists to understand regulatory expectations and promote accountability in data handling, while also calling for collective action to address malpractices by data controllers and processors.
The new Eldoret regional office is expected to enhance the ODPC’s capacity to oversee compliance and address data privacy concerns, further solidifying Kenya’s leadership in digital transformation and privacy protection.
