Farmers in Kenya’s agricultural heartland have received a significant boost with the launch of the AgriGhala warehouse facility in Kipkenyo. This state-of-the-art storage facility, launched today, is set to revolutionize post-harvest handling and market access for farmers in the region.
The AgriGhala warehouse operates under the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS), a framework designed to minimize post-harvest losses and empower farmers to track market trends, ensuring they sell their produce at optimal prices.
The facility provides secure storage for a wide range of farm produce, focusing on cereals such as maize and wheat, which are staples of Uasin Gishu County’s agriculture.
Farmers will pay Sh176 per bag as a preparation cost and a monthly storage fee of Sh46 per bag.
In addition to secure storage, the warehouse offers a groundbreaking feature: farmers are issued storage receipts that can be used as collateral for loans.
This innovative approach allows farmers to access credit without traditional forms of collateral, such as logbooks or title deeds, giving them much-needed financial flexibility.
Speaking at the launch, Jonathan Bii, Governor of Uasin Gishu County, praised AgriGhala as a solution to the market access challenges farmers face.
“This innovation addresses post-harvest losses and enables farmers to store their produce, track market prices, and sell at the best time for maximum returns. I urge farmers to embrace this initiative through their cooperatives,” said Governor Bii.
In a Facebook post following the event, the Governor reiterated the importance of the facility in enhancing agricultural productivity and profitability. He encouraged patience among farmers, urging them to wait for favorable prices before selling their produce.
Eng Kizito Odhiambo, the founder and CEO of AgriGhala, expressed his excitement about the facility’s potential impact.
“AgriGhala is more than just storage; it is a lifeline for farmers seeking to maximize their yields and access credit. Our goal is to expand these warehouses across Kenya, giving farmers everywhere the tools they need to succeed,” said Eng Kizito.

The facility is designed to store farm produce for up to six months under optimal conditions, ensuring quality is maintained while farmers await better market prices.
This feature is expected to significantly enhance food security and reduce wastage, a persistent challenge in Kenya’s agricultural sector.
As Kenya’s breadbasket, Uasin Gishu County is well-positioned to benefit from this initiative.
With large-scale production of maize and wheat, the AgriGhala warehouse promises to bolster the region’s agricultural economy and improve farmers’ bargaining power.
