Ten people died on the spot with 20 others left nursing life threatening injuries after a fatal accident at River Yala Bridge at Iguhu area along the Kakamega – Kisumu road.
The accident occurred after a Mercedes Benz tanker lost control and collided with two Matatus traveling in the opposite direction.
According to Kakamega South Sub County Police Commander, James Makau Masai, the accident involved a Mercedes Benz Tanker with registration number KAS 537W/ZC 6451, which was traveling from Kisumu towards Kakamega.
The driver, whose identity remains unknown, reportedly hit a bump on the road, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The tanker veered off the road and crashed into two oncoming vehicles heading from Kakamega to Kisumu.
The affected vehicles were a Matatu from Mitrans Sacco where the driver’s identity remains unknown, and the number of passengers on board not yet confirmed. The second matatu was Transline Sacco that was carrying 14 passengers at the time of the collision.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Kakamega County General and Referral Hospital Morgue where they will await identification and postmortem examination. Meanwhile, the injured victims remain under medical care at various local hospitals.
The tanker remains at the scene, and authorities are working diligently to trace the driver, who fled the scene following the accident. The two Matatus involved in the crash are also still on-site and are awaiting to be towed to Kakamega Police Station for further investigation and documentation.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash, with officers from the Western region traffic department on the ground to gather more details. The vehicles involved have been photographed and sketched for evidence, and a more detailed report is expected to follow as the investigation progresses.
