Chepsaita cross country awakens a sleeping village with “running for education and change” marathon

By Kevin Sang, Eldoret

The highly anticipated Chepsaita Cross Country kicked off with an electrifying atmosphere, drawing over 11,000 athletes across various categories.

This year’s theme, Running for Education, not only celebrated athleticism but also highlighted the profound connection between sports and education. The event saw the distribution of Ksh 10 million to ten schools in Uasin Gishu County, with each institution receiving Ksh 1 million. These funds will directly benefit students, as each will receive Ksh 10,000 to support their education.

The event attracted celebrated athletes, including world champions Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon, whose presence inspired both participants and spectators. Speaking passionately, Kipyegon called for a united stand against femicide, emphasizing the need to protect women, particularly in light of the troubling trend affecting female athletes.

Government Support and Future Commitments

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen highlighted the government’s unwavering support for athletics, revealing a Ksh 52 million investment in this year’s cross country. He also assured the public of continued efforts to elevate athletics, citing the establishment of several training camps under Athletics Kenya’s management.

Farouk Kibet, the patron of the Chepsaita Cross Country, emphasized the importance of combating doping in sports. He urged the government to regulate and crack down on individuals exploiting athletes by introducing performance-enhancing drugs.

The event’s high attendance, with over 22,000 people flocking to Chepsaita, provided a significant economic boost to the local community as businesses thrived.

This year’s cross country also addressed climate change concerns, stressing the need for clean air to ensure athletes’ performance and health. Athletics Kenya showcased a new air quality monitoring device acquired during the COP29 meeting to promote sustainable practices in sports.

Global Recognition and Improved Standards

The Chepsaita Cross Country earned a prestigious Gold Label from World Athletics, marking a significant improvement from last year’s edition, where previous records were unmet.

With a perfect blend of sports, education, and advocacy, this year’s Chepsaita Cross Country stands as a testament to the transformative power of athletics in driving positive change.
