Self-help groups in Nambale Sub-county have received Sh1 million in grants from the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) to boost household incomes and promote sustainable livelihoods.
Speaking at Esidende Comprehensive School, Catherine Omanyo, the Busia County Woman Representative, said the funds will support 10 registered groups, each receiving Sh100, 000 to expand their income-generating projects.
“We are giving out Sh1 million to 10 groups in this sub-county so that they can improve their projects and grow their businesses. This will empower our people economically and help them live sustainable lives,” she said.
Omanyo urged residents to form registered groups and engage in viable projects to benefit from future grants.
“We want to support women, youth and persons with disabilities, but you must belong to a registered group with an active project. Take advantage of these opportunities to improve your livelihoods,” she added.
She cautioned beneficiaries against fraudsters demanding kickbacks in her name.

“This money is meant to benefit you. No one from my office will ask for a fee or refund. If anyone demands money, report them to security agencies or inform me so that action can be taken,” she warned.
Omanyo also called on residents to support government development projects, citing ongoing investments in markets, roads and electricity connectivity across Busia County.
On party matters, she appealed for unity within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying dialogue and inclusivity were key values championed by the late Raila Odinga.
“There is room for dialogue so that we move in the same direction. ODM is a party of democracy and inclusivity. Let us remain united and promote peace,” she said.
Omanyo further stated that during the upcoming National Delegates Conference (NDC), she will seek full ratification as the party’s Secretary General.
Nambale Sub-county Assistant County Commissioner Okoth Wendo urged residents to apply for national identification cards to access government services.
“Many people are missing out on services due to lack of IDs. Our elderly are facing challenges in land succession processes. Let us ensure we acquire IDs to benefit from government programs,” he said.
