Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale is at risk of losing his position as Senate Majority Whip after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Disciplinary Committee directed him to explain why he should not be punished for openly supporting an opponent in the Malava by-election.
If sanctioned, Khalwale could be stripped of the influential Majority Whip seat, which comes with key perks including an official office, additional staff, allowances, enhanced security detail, and significant influence over House business.
Speculation is already rife that the position could go to Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli, following hints made by President William Ruto’s personal assistant, Farouk Kibet, during a recent rally in Webuye.
In a letter signed by UDA Disciplinary Committee chairperson Charles Njenga, the party accused Khalwale of engaging in political activities, utterances, and associations contrary to UDA’s position.
“This includes but is not limited to your open support and participation in the campaign of candidates from different political parties who are competing with UDA candidates. Your support has been open, vocal, and substantial, which clearly shows you are promoting a position against your party’s interest, therefore acting against the party constitution and code of conduct,” the letter reads in part.
The committee further said Khalwale’s actions demonstrated allegiance to another party, describing them as disloyalty to UDA, which sponsored his election as Kakamega Senator.
“Your said activities, which are political in character, are further in breach of the party code of conduct which you subscribe to and amount to gross misconduct in the contemplation of the UDA party constitution,” the letter adds.
Citing Article 75 of the Constitution of Kenya, together with the party’s code of conduct and oath of office, the committee emphasized that Khalwale is expected to uphold the highest standards of loyalty and conduct as a party member serving in an elective position.
The committee has now given him 14 days to respond to the allegations, failing which disciplinary proceedings will be initiated.
Khalwale has publicly campaigned for DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako, accusing UDA of sidelining Ryan Injendi, the son of the late Malulu Injendi, in what he termed as disrespect to the people of Malava Constituency. The by-election was triggered by the death of Malulu Injendi.
