Doctors’ strike at Moi Referral cripples emergency services

By Kevin Sang, Eldoret
Doctors at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) have vowed to continue their strike after negotiations with the management failed to resolve their grievances. The ongoing strike has severely impacted operations, with emergency services at the hospital now significantly crippled.
Speaking on the crisis, Dr. Kamunzi Mulei confirmed that while the emergency unit remains operational, it is struggling to provide adequate services. “The unit is not fully shut down, but services are far from normal. We encourage citizens to seek medical attention elsewhere for better healthcare,” he stated.
The striking doctors have raised several issues, including unremitted salary deductions meant for financial entities such as bank loans, SACCOs, and health insurance. The delays have left many medical professionals in financial distress, making it difficult for them to continue offering their services effectively.
Dr. Rono emphasized that the strike would persist until their demands are met. “Doctors must be well remunerated, promotions should be granted to those due, and deductions should be remitted to the relevant authorities. Until this is addressed, we will not return to work,” he declared.
Meanwhile, patients and their families have expressed frustration over the deteriorating healthcare situation. Many are stranded at the facility due to the shortage of doctors, urging the hospital management to urgently intervene and resolve the crisis.
Despite the worsening situation, MTRH has yet to issue an official statement on the state of hospital operations since the strike began. As emergency services continue to decline, the public is calling for swift action to restore normalcy and ensure patients receive the care they need.
