Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas “Toto” Shimanyula has called for changes at the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), accusing its leadership of failing to address challenges affecting the country’s top-flight football.
Shimanyula questioned the leadership of FKF President Hussein Mohammed, saying delays in the start of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) had subjected clubs to unnecessary financial pressure.
Speaking at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega during the unveiling of 19 new players and the club’s new kits for the season, Shimanyula said clubs continued to meet their financial obligations to players despite uncertainty over the league’s start.
“We are paying our players salaries every month, but they are not working because the league has not started. This is a loss to the clubs,” he said.
Shimanyula said clubs invest heavily in assembling and preparing their squads for each season and should therefore be given a clear and predictable competition calendar.
“When you sign a player, you have a contract with him. Whether the league has started or not, you are expected to pay him. The longer the league takes to start, the more losses the clubs make,” he said.
The Homeboyz chairman said the situation required FKF to listen to clubs and other stakeholders and address their concerns.
“If the stakeholders in Kenyan football feel that there should be changes, then there should be changes in the leadership of FKF,” Shimanyula said.
He said the federation should prioritise the interests of clubs, players and fans in its decision-making, arguing that uncertainty over the league calendar was undermining the development of the sport.
Shimanyula’s remarks came amid delays and uncertainty surrounding the start of the new Kenyan Premier League season, with clubs having already invested in squad building and preparations.
The chairman also welcomed Government measures targeting betting-related and match-fixing offences in football, saying stronger enforcement would help protect the integrity of the sport.
“We must protect the integrity of our league. Anyone involved in activities that compromise the game should face the consequences,” he said.
Shimanyula said strict enforcement of football regulations would send a strong message to players, officials and other stakeholders.
“It will bring discipline and dignity to our football. We want a league where the outcome of every match is determined on the pitch,” he said.
Homeboyz have strengthened their squad with 19 new signings as they prepare for the new campaign.
Shimanyula said the club was ready for the season and hoped the new recruits would strengthen the team’s campaign once the league gets underway.
