The County Government of Kakamega is mourning the sudden death of Ms. Jessica Weku Wesonga, the Chief Officer in charge of Livestock, Veterinary Services and Fisheries.
Governor Fernandes Barasa confirmed her death in a condolence message, describing the late officer as a dedicated, versatile and hardworking public servant who had become a pillar in the county’s agricultural and water sectors.
“Chief Jessica’s passing is a profound shock and a great loss to Kakamega. She was a committed leader who wanted to understand people’s challenges first-hand, and she used that knowledge to drive impactful programmes,” said Governor Barasa.
Ms. Weku joined the County Government on December 7, 2022, as the Chief Officer for Water and Sanitation Services. She later moved to the Ministry of Agriculture in 2023, where she was placed in charge of Fisheries Development. Her portfolio was expanded on October 23, 2023, to include Livestock and Veterinary Services, a role she held until her untimely demise.
Colleagues remember her as a leader who preferred spending time in the field rather than behind her desk. She often worked closely with farmers, livestock keepers, and fishing communities to ensure county policies translated into tangible results on the ground.
“She brought a down-to-earth approach that earned her the trust of farmers and respect among her peers,” said a senior county official who worked with her in the agriculture docket.
Under her stewardship, Kakamega made significant strides in expanding access to clean water, strengthening fisheries, and boosting livestock and poultry development. She is also credited with championing agricultural value chains that helped farmers access better markets.
Governor Barasa noted that her professionalism and ability to build partnerships brought in development collaborators who supported county programmes in agriculture and water services.
“With her death, my administration has lost a team player, a loyal worker, and an inspiration to the youth,” he said.
