The construction of Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County is on track to be ready in time to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa toured the ongoing Phase II construction of Bukhungu Stadium on Wednesday, expressing satisfaction with the progress.
During the inspection, Mvurya reassured the public of the government’s commitment to ensuring the stadium meets the necessary standards for the prestigious tournament. He emphasized that the project is progressing on schedule and will provide a world-class venue.
“We are making steady progress, and I am pleased with the quality of work being done. Bukhungu Stadium will soon be a world-class facility capable of hosting major tournaments, including AFCON 2027,” said CS Mvurya.
Alongside the developments at Bukhungu, CS Mvurya also highlighted the ongoing upgrades at Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, Bungoma County. The stadium, which began construction in 2019, is nearing completion, with final touches expected by December 2025. Enhancements include canopy shades for spectators and improved security lighting to accommodate night events.
“These stadium projects are part of a larger national initiative to upgrade sports infrastructure. We are ensuring that our facilities meet international standards while benefiting local communities by promoting talent development and creating business opportunities,” Mvurya explained.
Governor Barasa expressed confidence in the ongoing construction, stating, “We are here to show our commitment to nurturing sports talent and creating economic opportunities for our people. With the national government fully involved, we are confident that Bukhungu will be completed on time.”

He assured that all necessary measures are being taken to meet AFCON’s hosting requirements and emphasized the stadium’s role in advancing sports development in the region.
Once completed, the stadiums are expected to boost local football by hosting more national and international matches. They will also provide improved training grounds for aspiring athletes and create economic opportunities through sports tourism.
“As a county, we are excited about the opportunities this stadium will bring. It is not just about football; it’s about the businesses, jobs, and prestige that come with hosting major sporting events,” Barasa added.
