Hundreds of youth stranded outside Eldoret polytechnic after foiled foreign recruitment exercise

By Kevin Sang, Eldoret

Hundreds of youths from Uasin Gishu County were left stranded outside Eldoret National Polytechnic today after a foreign recruitment exercise, advertised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, was abruptly called off.

The frustrated young people, many of whom had arrived as early as 5 a.m., were turned away by security officers at the gate, who cited a lack of information regarding the event. The youths had hoped to take part in the recruitment drive, which had been promoted on the ministry’s official website.

Chepkarai Marius, a youth from Kesses Sub-County, expressed his dismay at the government’s failure to follow through with the advertised event.

He criticized the Ministry for misleading young people, accusing them of perpetuating unemployment in the country. “The government should not frustrate the very youths it claims to be helping,” Marius said, adding that the foreign employment opportunity, which had given many hope, had now become a distant dream.

The disappointed crowd voiced concerns that the government’s inaction would only worsen the unemployment crisis, leaving many of them without a clear path to gainful employment.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection is yet to provide a statement on the incident. The youths are now demanding clarity on whether the recruitment exercise will be rescheduled or canceled entirely.
