Ivy Anyona, a bright student from Bunyore Girls’ National School in Vihiga County, emerged as one of the top performers in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, scoring an impressive ‘A’ plain with 84 points.
With her stellar results, Anyona is setting her sights on a future in oncology, driven by a deep desire to help combat the growing cancer burden in Kenya.
In an exclusive interview at her family home in Sikata on Friday, Anyona expressed her gratitude to God and shared her passion for pursuing a career in oncology. “I was expecting an A, but not 84 points. I am so thankful, and my dream is to become an oncologist to help Kenya manage the increasing number of cancer cases,” she said.
Anyona’s journey to academic excellence was not without its challenges. She recalled the difficult moments during her time in class eight when her mother had to relocate, and she was left in the care of her aunt and uncle.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic added another layer of difficulty, but Anyona pushed through, achieving a commendable 405 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
Reflecting on her success, Anyona credited hard work, dedication, and prayer for her outstanding performance. “I believe in myself and have always worked hard to be the best in whatever I do,” she said, offering words of encouragement to other learners. “My advice to others is to believe in themselves, stay confident, and always strive for excellence.”
Anyona also expressed deep appreciation for the support she received from her teachers and parents throughout her secondary education. “My teachers were always willing to help me when I approached them for consultation. And I’m forever grateful to my parents for their unwavering support, providing me with everything I needed for my studies,” she added.
Her mother, Dr. Ruth Mitalo, could not hide her joy. “As a parent, I am incredibly proud of Ivy. She promised me that she would do well when she was in primary school, and she has kept her word,” Dr. Mitalo said, beaming with pride.
In Chekulo village, Kabuchai Constituency, Abraham Watta from Alliance High School also scored an ‘A’ plain in the KCSE exams. Like Anyona, Watta thanked God for his good health and credited his parents for their support. Watta, who hopes to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering, dreams of joining the University of Nairobi to further his studies.
