He outlined the recruitment of 548 new healthcare workers, both technical and non-technical, aimed at improving the staff-to-patient ratio in county hospitals. These new hires will enhance service delivery across the region.
“The County Public Service Board is currently finalizing the selection of candidates, and in three weeks, they will receive their appointment letters,” Lusaka confirmed.
In addition to staffing improvements, Lusaka highlighted key infrastructure projects that are making an impact on healthcare delivery.
The 300-bed maternity unit at the County Referral Hospital is now operational, offering better care for mothers and children. The outpatient block at Webuye Hospital has been completed, while construction of the psychiatric hospital at Bungoma Referral Hospital is ongoing.
The governor also praised the implementation of a new Health Care Information Management System, which is already 90 percent rolled out in major sub-county hospitals.
This system will streamline patient care by efficiently tracking medical supplies, managing patient information, and ensuring smooth transitions between healthcare levels. It is also expected to reduce revenue leakages and improve the collection of funds for the healthcare system.
On the issue of casual workers, Lusaka acknowledged the challenges surrounding delayed payments. He attributed this delay to funding issues with the Controller of Budget, but reassured residents that the arrears would be resolved quickly.
“All casual workers will receive their seven-month payments by next week, once the Controller of Budget releases the funds,” he assured.
The governor also emphasized his administration’s commitment to supporting marginalized groups. He noted the success of county trade loans, which have empowered women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
In recognition of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, Lusaka announced that PWDs in the county are now eligible for free medical care in all public hospitals, a move aimed at alleviating the hardships they face when unwell.
In addition, Lusaka pointed to the construction of modern markets in Kamukuywa, Kanduyi, and Chwele as a way of bolstering local trade and economic growth.
He assured residents of his dedication to delivery on his Agenda and urged everyone to take advantage of the government programs and register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to help them not being stuck with medical treatments.
