Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has applauded the Ministry of Education for introducing the new funding model, acknowledging that it will ensure no student is deprived of education as a result of lack of school fees.
“I want to appreciate what the ministry of education is doing especially on the funding model as no student will be sent home because of tuition fees,” said Barasa.
He further made an appeal to the ministry to sort out the cries by the students were disadvantaged by the funding model after being placed in unfavorable bands.
Barasa said that if the mess is sorted out on time, it will ensure that the students get support from the government to further their university education.
The governor was speaking at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Mmust) where he pledged to support at least 100 students with county government scholarship.
Dr Pamela Sitienei, the chairperson of Mmust University Council said “the funding model is functional” and that “no student will miss admission on account of lack of tuition fees”.
The institutions Vice Chancellor Solomon Shibairo asked the students to be patient with the government over the new funding model.
Prof Shibairo said: “The new funding model is designed to provide support to all students from various backgrounds therefore fostering an exclusive education environment by enhancing access to education,”
