Wevarsity Sacco’s ‘Akiba Derby’ to showcase eight teams in a bid to market Sacco and recruit members

Wevarsity Sacco is set to host an exciting football tournament, the ‘Akiba Derby,’ featuring eight teams from September 12 to 14, 2024.

The event, aimed at marketing the Sacco and recruiting new members, will take place at two venues: Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Mmust) and the Kakamega Approved School grounds.

The derby will see participation from four teams affiliated with the university’s workers’ unions, namely the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA), and the Wevarsity Sacco FC. Additionally, four guest teams, including the popular Kakamega Boda Boda FC, which will compete, bringing together diverse groups of players and fans.

“The ‘Akiba Derby’ aims to offer more than just football excitement. It is strategically designed to enhance Wevarsity Sacco’s visibility, attract new members, and promote its financial services to a broader audience,” said Ursula Samoey, Wevarsity Sacco’s Honorary Secretary

The Sacco has been keen on expanding its membership base and sees this event as an ideal platform to connect with potential members from different sectors, particularly the educational and service industry communities.

“We’re thrilled to organize this tournament, not just as a sports event but as a unique opportunity to engage with the community and showcase the benefits of being part of Wevarsity Sacco,” said Ms Samoey, adding, “Through the ‘Akiba Derby,’ we hope to demonstrate our commitment to supporting our members, whether through financial services or community engagement activities.”

The tournament promises a festive atmosphere, with various activities planned alongside the football matches.

According to Rehema Atieno, the Sacco’s Chief Executive Officer, football will be the major event with teams also participating in other games like netball, volleyball, spoken word and tag of war.

Ms Atieno said Team building sessions will be offered to select teams to encourage unity despite their diversities. This is because the selected teams have to achieve a common goal usually reflected in the vision, mission and the motto of their organisation. The event will provide an opportunity for creating awareness about Wevarsity Sacco and its partners,”

She also said there will information booths where attendees can learn about the Sacco’s products and services, membership registration desks, and entertainment to ensure a lively experience for all participants and spectators.

The matches will not only provide entertainment but also serve as a networking opportunity for participants, fostering camaraderie and potential collaborations among the different unions and organizations involved.

The ‘Akiba Derby’ underscores Wevarsity Sacco’s innovative approach to member engagement and community outreach. By leveraging the universal appeal of sports, the Sacco aims to strengthen its brand presence and build lasting relationships with existing and prospective members.
