U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman announced today that she has submitted her resignation to President Joe Biden, concluding a tenure marked by significant strides in deepening the partnership between the United States and Kenya.
In a statement shared with embassy staff, Whitman expressed pride in the work she and her team accomplished during her time in Nairobi, emphasizing a people-centered agenda that addressed critical issues such as health, security, and economic development.
Whitman, who arrived in Kenya in 2022, highlighted key accomplishments, including U.S. support in responding to devastating floods in 2023 and efforts to combat diseases such as malaria, HIV, and MPOX.
“I am proud of leading a people-centered agenda that saves lives, increases security, and creates economic opportunities for Kenyans and Americans,” Whitman said, noting that U.S. assistance has been vital in alleviating the health challenges faced by Kenya and other nations in the region.
One of the most significant milestones of Whitman’s tenure was the elevation of Kenya to the status of the United States’ first Major Non-NATO Ally in sub-Saharan Africa. This designation, announced earlier this year, signals a deepening of U.S.-Kenya ties and underscores the importance of the two nations’ collaboration in upholding democratic values and enhancing regional security.
On the economic front, Whitman worked to expand trade and investment between the two countries. Her “Why Africa, Why Kenya?” presentation to American companies and entrepreneurs helped increase U.S. business interest in Kenya, leading to historic highs in trade and job creation.
Furthermore, under her leadership, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi successfully reduced the wait time for non-immigrant visa appointments from over two years to just two months, addressing a major bottleneck in consular services.
As she prepares to step down, Whitman reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Kenya, noting the strength of the bilateral relationship. “Our relations are stronger than ever, and I am confident this trajectory will continue,” she said, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve both the U.S. government and the people of Kenya.
Whitman’s resignation comes as the United States prepares for the inauguration of a new president in January.
In her statement, she conveyed her well-wishes to the incoming administration, while acknowledging the continued dedication of the U.S. embassy team, both Kenyan and American, who will carry forward the embassy’s mission under the leadership of Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard.
Reflecting on her tenure, Whitman expressed gratitude for the support and friendship extended to her by the Kenyan government and people.
“I will depart Kenya full of gratitude for the team that has worked tirelessly on my behalf, for the opportunity to serve my country, and for the friendship offered by the government and the people of the beautiful Republic of Kenya.”
Ambassador Whitman’s departure marks the end of a two-year term that saw the strengthening of U.S.-Kenya relations across multiple sectors. As she leaves Nairobi, the enduring partnership between the two nations appears poised to continue flourishing in the years ahead.
