Busia Woman MP condemns injustices against women in marriage

By Reuben Olita, Busia

Busia Women Rep Catherine Omanyo has condemned the injustices some men inflict on their wives, calling for an end to such brutal acts.

Omanyo highlighted that injustices against women in marriages and various offices often force women to persevere in silence, as they are unable to disclose their suffering publicly.

“Instead of revealing their struggles, many women opt for divine intervention, hoping to see another day as long as they are okay. I urge men to remember that women are human beings, with feelings. They deserve to be loved and respected,” she said.

Omanyo further added, “Do not discriminate against women or abuse them like animals. You may find one day that they have passed on due to depression after enduring such torment.”

She emphasized that the solution lies in avoiding injustices, indiscriminate killings, torture, and demeaning behavior toward women, urging society not to treat them as doormats.

The Women Rep reminded everyone that women have rights enshrined in the Constitution, and when empowered, they are not a threat. She pointed out that women are not competing with men but are complementing them, stressing the need for equality and respect.

Ms. Omanyo also called for teamwork and equal opportunities for both genders in all spheres of life. She urged the government to implement measures to prevent injustices against women.

Marital captivity remains a significant issue, where women are unable to end their marriages due to various reasons, even when the courts may allow a divorce. Despite the legal option, women are often forced to stay in their marriages because of religious or civil laws from their countries of origin.

At some point, the suffering becomes unbearable, and these women reach a breaking point, saying, “Enough is enough; I want and need a divorce.”
