Governor Barasa backs Raila’s handshake with Ruto

By Faith Anene, Kakamega

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has expressed his support for ODM leader Raila Odinga’s decision to collaborate with President William Ruto, emphasizing the importance of unity and development for the country.

Speaking at the International Women’s Day celebrations in Mumias East, Barasa stated that the handshake between Raila and President Ruto would foster national cohesion and accelerate development.

“As Kakamega leaders, I want to say here today that we support the handshake between Raila Odinga and the president because it will bring development and national cohesion,” he remarked.

On Friday, Ruto and Raila reunited, pledging to strengthen their ties if a memorandum of understanding between them is fully implemented. The two were the main rivals in the 2022 presidential election, and their partnership is expected to reshape the political landscape.

Barasa’s wife, Prof Janet Kassilly also used the occasion to address pressing social issues affecting women and children in Kakamega County, particularly teenage pregnancies.

Reflecting on her progress since taking office, Kasilly revealed that the number of teenage pregnancies had significantly reduced from 14,000 to 9,000. She credited this decrease to her ongoing efforts to promote democracy, awareness, and education, while urging all women to join her in this mission.

In her speech, she also advocated for women’s rights to own land. She emphasized that land ownership is essential for women to gain economic independence and practice agriculture.

“It’s essential that women are given the right to own land so they can practice agriculture and secure a better future for their families,” she said.
