The stage is set for one of Kenya’s most eagerly anticipated athletic events, the National Cross Country Championships, which will take place on February 8, 2024, at the Eldoret Sports Club.
This year’s edition is expected to be one of the best-organized in recent years, drawing top national and international athletes for a highly competitive race.
Abraham Mutai, the Regional Chairman of Athletics Kenya, confirmed that preparations have reached their peak.
Mutai also announced a significant increase in prize money, aimed at further motivating athletes.
This enhancement is made possible through generous sponsorship from Betika Limited, Coca-Cola, and the Uasin Gishu County Government, all of whom have played a key role in ensuring smooth logistical planning.
Hussein Mohammed, the event’s Technical Director, assured that the competition will be held on a 2KM course, meticulously prepared to meet national cross-country standards. A team from the National Strategic Committee has been overseeing track preparations, ensuring an optimal environment for the athletes.
Kennedy Tanui, the Race Director, confirmed that registration officially closed on Tuesday, with the remaining days dedicated to the distribution of race kits and bibs on Friday.
The event will feature several race categories, including, 6KM race for Under-20 Women, 8KM race for Men, 10KM race for both Men and Women and 2KM loop for both Men and Women.
The competition is set to attract elite runners not only from Kenya but also from Uganda, Ethiopia, and other countries. Given the high level of competition, the event will serve as a key preparatory ground for athletes eyeing the 2028 Olympic Games.
