Breaking News: Former Busia deputy governor Mulomi dies after collapsing in Nakuru

By Reuben Olita, Busia

Former Busia Deputy Governor Moses Okhoba Mulomi has passed away after collapsing while en route to Nairobi for a board meeting.

Family sources revealed that Mulomi fell gravely ill upon reaching Nakuru and tragically succumbed to an illness, the cause of which has not yet been confirmed.

Before his passing, Mulomi had a distinguished career. He worked as a Senior Manager for the Magombe Irrigation Scheme in Bunyala for several years, later seeking opportunities in Zambia where he served as the Director of the International Red Locust Control Organisation for Central and Southern Africa.

At the time of his death, Mulomi was a Director on the Kenya Cultural Centre Board.

In a heartfelt tribute, former Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong described Mulomi as a dedicated leader who devoted his life to public service.

“His outstanding service and performance as my Deputy Governor and County Executive Committee Member for Healthcare Services will remain a source of inspiration and motivation to many aspiring leaders,” Ojaamong said.

Ojaamong further remembered Mulomi as a generous and cheerful individual. “He was a person of influence and outstanding ability. His wise counsel and guidance will be missed by many. We thank God for the years we shared with him. My deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you,” Ojaamong added.

“His quiet strength, invaluable guidance, and unwavering commitment to progress made him not just a political mentor, but a father figure and trusted advisor to many, including myself,” ~Omtatah

DAP-K party leader also mourned Mulomi, expressing sadness over the untimely loss of his friend and former 2022 gubernatorial candidate. “I interacted with him two months ago during our grassroots engagements in Busia, and we had many plans for this year,” he wrote on his X-account.

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah praised Mulomi for his humility, dedication, and commitment to the county’s progress. “His quiet strength, invaluable guidance, and unwavering commitment to progress made him not just a political mentor, but a father figure and trusted advisor to many, including myself,” Omtatah said.

Mulomi served as Deputy Governor for five years before running for governor in 2022, where he was one of five candidates.

The election was ultimately won by Dr Paul Otuoma of ODM, with Arthur Odera as his running mate.

Mulomi, who ran under the Democratic Alliance Party of Kenya (DAP-K), stepped down and endorsed ANC’s John Bunyasi, which led to Bunyasi finishing second in the race. Daniel Mogoria and Moi University lecturer Michael Oloo followed in third and fourth places, respectively.
