GAME OF THRONES: Governor Barasa endorses Bishop Khamala as his successor in 2032, bypasses his deputy Ayub Savula

By Faith Anene, Kakamega

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has endorsed Lurambi MP, Bishop Titus Khamala, as his preferred successor in the 2032 general elections.

In a bold move that is expected to stir political temperatures, Barasa outlined a clear plan for the region’s political trajectory, linking it to the historical precedents set by previous governors.

Speaking during Butsotso Cultural event on the eve of the New Year at Shikoti market, Barasa explained that Kakamega’s political leadership is following a pattern that must continue to uphold fairness and regional balance.

He pointed out that the first Kakamega Governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, who hails from the Marama community in Butere, had served two terms of 10 years. Barasa, who comes from the Wanga community, stated that he too would complete his two terms, adhering to the same timeline.

“This is not just about me. The people of Kakamega have a plan, and we must keep it going. Oparanya served his 10 years, and I will also serve mine as a son of the Wanga community. It’s now time for the Butsotso community to step up, and I believe Bishop Titus Khamala is the right leader to take the mantle in 2032,” Barasa said.

He added: “”Bishop Khamala has demonstrated good leadership skills with a proven development track record in Lurambi and beyond. His influence, experience, and commitment to the electorate, makes him the ideal candidate to build on the foundation we’ve set for Kakamega.”

By endorsing Khamala, Barasa is signaling a shift in the region’s political dynamics. The move is seen as a strategic attempt to ensure that the Kakamega governorship remains within the region’s influential communities, and alienating the communities from Kakamega North (Malava, Likuyani and Lugari) that have always gotten a raw deal.

Barasa’s endorsement of Khamala also carries significant political weight, as it indicates the governor’s intention to bypass his current deputy, Ayub Savula, who is rumored to enjoy a frosty relationship with the governor.

Savula, who has his own political ambitions, is now facing the challenge of reconciling with Barasa’s endorsement of Khamala. In 2022, Savula was forced to drop his gubernatorial ambitions in favour of Barasa, a marriage that was short-lived.

Sources close to the county government have suggested that the strained relationship between Barasa and Savula has been an ongoing issue, with disagreements over governance and political strategy.

Despite Savula’s prominence in local politics, Barasa’s endorsement of Khamala appears to be a clear signal that the deputy governor will not be in line to inherit the governorship in 2032. It’s even rumoured that Barasa is already in the market shopping for his 2027 running mate.

“It is not just about one person or one community. It’s about the future of Kakamega and making sure we are all represented. As I complete my term, it is crucial that the Butsotso community has its time to lead, and Bishop Khamala is the right person for this,” Barasa said.

This announcement, however, comes amid growing political interest in the Kakamega governorship race. Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, a key political figure in the county has declared to run for the seat in 2027.

Additionally, current Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has also expressed interest in the governorship, adding another layer of competition to the race, thus complicating Barasa’s re-election.

The race has also seen the entry of Kakamega Women Representative Elsie Muhanda, who has shown interest in vying for the governorship. Known for her active role in advocating for women’s rights and community development,

Muhanda’s candidacy brings a fresh dimension to the political contest. Her supporters believe that her leadership would bring much-needed attention to gender issues and inclusive development for all citizens of Kakamega County.
