Former Harambee Stars legend Josephat Murila, popularly known as “Controller,” has expressed his gratitude to President William Ruto for appointing Salim Mvurya as the new Cabinet Secretary for Sports.

Murila, speaking at the Tsunami Super Cup finals at Shihuli Primary School, under the patronage of businessman Brian Bulinda, highlighted the importance of this appointment for the future of Kenyan football.

Murila emphasized the need for collaboration between the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Ministry of Sports, urging them to work together to develop young talents, particularly footballers who will represent Kenya in prestigious tournaments like the 2025 CHAN Championships and the 2027 AFCON.

“Now that we have a dedicated Sports Minister in Salim Mvurya, it is crucial that we all unite – FKF, the Ministry, and all stakeholders – to develop our young footballers. We have great potential, and with proper support, Kenya can compete at the highest levels,” said Murila.

“Kenya’s football future lies in the hands of these young talents. If we give them the right resources, opportunities, and encouragement, they can lead us to success in major tournaments. Our young footballers need the support and structure to realize their potential. It’s time to focus on building strong teams from the grassroots level to ensure that Kenya can make a mark in the CHAN and AFCON tournaments,” he added

However, Murila expressed concern over the way some political leaders in the county organize football tournaments.

He pointed out that these events often exclude key stakeholders like former players and football administrators, and are sometimes used for political gain rather than focusing on the development of young talent. “These tournaments should not be platforms for politicians to gain mileage, but opportunities for our youth to shine and get the support they need,” Murila said

Brian Bulinda, the main sponsor of the Tsunami Super Cup, shared Murila’s sentiment and reiterated his commitment to nurturing young talent.

“My main focus is to give these young people an opportunity to succeed, not just in football but in life. I want to ensure they stay away from drugs and substance abuse, and instead channel their energy into something positive,” Bulinda stated.

“Talent development isn’t just about organizing tournaments; it’s about creating a long-term plan that supports these young players every step of the way, from grassroots football to professional leagues,” said Bulinda,  adding, “I’m passionate about helping these youngsters see football as a means to a brighter future. My goal is to ensure they have access to the resources they need to develop their skills and achieve their dreams.”
