The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) – Maseno North Diocese has announced plans to upgrade its mission hospital to a Level (V) facility. This transformative initiative aims to expand the hospital’s bed capacity, enhance medical expertise, and improve on patient care.
The Anglican Maseno Mission Hospital, which has been a cornerstone of healthcare since its establishment in 1906 in Vihiga and Kisumu counties is set to undergo extensive renovations and expansions.
This initiative aligns with the hospital’s commitment to provide comprehensive care, catering to the growing healthcare needs of the community. With the addition of more medical consultants and staff, the hospital aims to offer timely referrals and specialized treatment, a vital resource for patients in the area.
During the launch of the ACK Maseno Mission Hospital (AMMH) and Anglican Medical Training College (AMTC) Strategic Plans 2025-2029, the Diocesan Bishop Charles Asilutwa said the upgrading of the mission hospital and its offshoot medical college will go a long way in enhancing its capacity in the provision of quality healthcare services
“This transformation is not just about buildings; it’s about healing and hope. Our goal is to ensure that every person who walks through our doors receives the quality care they deserve,” said Bishop Asilutwa.
He said that :“The launching of these strategic plan is an important landmark for the institutions involved. It marks a milestone in the growth and development of the hospital as well as the college,”
Bishop Asilutwa said that the Anglican Medical Training College – Maseno that was established in 1936 has significantly evolved from just training midwives to offering a wide range of health related programs, saying over the years, the college has fully been accredited by relevant bodies, ensuring it meets its educational standards.
“By focusing on academic excellence, infrastructure development and community engagement, the college is poised to becoming the medical college of choice envisioned for quality and significant healthcare sector for the well-being of the students and community it serves,” he said
Dr. Samwel Mwenda, representing Health Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai, highlighted that the plans will also promote research and collaboration in medical tourism, aiming for a future where quality healthcare is accessible to all Kenyans.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, who attended the launch, urged the national government to develop policies that support the growth of mission hospitals, acknowledging their critical role in enhancing local healthcare.
The senator also called upon the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula to expedite the passage of the County Boundaries Bill, 2024 into law in order to solve border disputes in the country.
