County inks deal with a Korean lobby group to empower Kakamega riders

The county government of Kakamega has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Global Civic Sharing Organization (GCS) to empower boda boda riders.

The Global Civic Sharing Organization, an NGO body from Southern Korea has allocated 30 Million to educate the boda boda riders on road safety. The program will be implemented in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA)

The riders will also get grants of up to two years to help them boost their transport businesses.

The GCS director Cho Hyunju said the program targets 240 beneficiaries and will scale the program in the future.

He said they are planning a model program that will make the riders have a means of income generation besides their daily jobs. Cho also said they will issue the beneficiaries with legal certificates after training.

On behalf of Governor Fernandes Barasa, Moffat Mandela, the County Executive Committee Member for Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender and Culture, backed up the collaboration saying it will boost boda boda operations in the county.

Moffat noted that Kakamega county has enjoyed collaboration with the South Korean government. “We have had a long-standing collaboration with the Korean government through the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Global Civic Sharing Organisation which is an NGO body. Through them, we have had on several occasions’ county staffs traveling to Korea supported by Global Civil Sharing Organization to have training in youth and women empowerment,” he said
