“Kenya has a chance to play the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Coach Firat

By Atanas Walila, Nairobi

Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat believes that Kenya has a chance to play in Fifa World Cup 2026 if greater strategies are put in place.

Speaking last night after his return in the country he said that the next Fifa World Cup has an advantage for African teams since it will have more teams and that means more slots for African teams.

Firat holds that it is time to terminate the negative perception and has called on the support of all stakeholders including fans to make it a reality.

“If you look at our football history, we have never made it to any World Cup or Olympic Games, so some people may think that we have no chance, but I believe we have a big chance. I know for sure that there is massive talent in Kenya but I’m yet to know the capacity we have, we need to start early search for these talents and make good use of them,” he advised.

The Turkish coach continued to mention that players, the manager and the entire staff should be given humble time to discharge their duties for better results.

“If all of us don’t fight each other and all of us work together, believing on the single focus and stay behind the team, then we will be at the 2026 World Cup,” Firat added.

He is expected to name his provisional squad ahead of the duel, which will be Kenya’s first since November 2021 when Harambee Stars won 2-1 against Rwanda in a World Cup qualifier match.

Many football enthusiasts will be hoping that Firat’s second stint in charge will be much improved from his first one where he only won one match out of the three in which he tutored the national team.

He has faced alot of challenges amongst them, the disbandment of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) by then Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and subsequent suspension of the country by Fifa.

The tactian will be expected to revive the ordeal of a national team whose last participation in an international competition was in 2019 at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
