Somber mood as Child succumbs to poisonous cassava

Somber mood has gripped residents of Ebusambe village, Matungu constituency of Kakamega county following the death of a 3 year old child after he ingested poisonous food.

Five others, among them 4 children are fighting for their life at Matungu hospital for allegedly eating poisonous cassava.

According to Dolphine Shiundu, the mother of the children bought the cassava from her husband’s brother and cooked it for lunch after the children insisted that they want to have a cassava meal.

"I bought some cassavas at their uncle's place to prepaire for them for lunch", Said Shiundu.

A few hours after the children consumed the cassava, they started complaining of stomach aches while others experience servere diarrhea.

“I was called by my brother Dennis Shiundu informing me that the children and our mother had fallen sick after eating cassava and had been rushed to Matungu hospital. I went to the hospital to find out what had happened. On arrival, I found my three-year-old daughter in critical condition and she had been out on oxygen support but she, unfortunately, passed on,” Added Shiundu.

However doctors at Matungu hospital said the four children were out of danger.

“We are still observing them to ensure they have recovered fully discharging them,” said one of the doctors.

Matungu sub-county public health officer Kevin Lumwachi said the children and their grandmother had suffered from cassava poisoning.

“Apart from the youngest who succumbed, the rest responded well to medication and are out of danger,” said Lumwachi.

The body of the deceased child was taken to Bungoma hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.
