This man Cleophas Malala: The thespian who wants to be Kakamega governor

Wetang’ula : “I have worked with Malala in the senate and he is a man of his own capabilities. He is a trusted and tested leader and if you elect him as the next Kakamega governor, you would have made us proud,”

When former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale shelved his governorship ambitions in favour of his successor, Cleophas Malala, the move was met with mixed reactions.

“We want a six piece in Kakamega right from the MCA to the President with Malala being our team captain in Kakamega. We want to uproot all Azimio strongholds in the county and the region at large. When you elect Malala, you will have helped us silence our critics,” said Mudavadi

The naysayers dismissed Malala’s candidature and described it as a ‘stillbirth’.

But for the firebrand politician, he kept on the faith and despite being underrated and humiliated by his competitors especially from Azimio la Umoja, but his humility seems to be paying off.

The combative thespian who is likened to Julius Malema, the firebrand South Africa politician is very calculative in nature to reach where he is today.

His political journey has always been an upward trend, from Mahiakalo MCA between 2013-2017 and serving as Kakamega County Assembly Deputy Speaker.

He would later be ousted after falling out with governor Wycliffe Oparanya.

Against all odds, Malala emerged from nowhere, beat his compatriots and became the second senator of Kakamega and went on to being appointed the Deputy Minority Leader in the Senate.

In the August 9 elections, Malala is trying his first stab at the governorship seat and determined to succeed outgoing area Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.

Malala throw onto the gauntlet and nominated Dr Beatrice Inyangala, a move that was least expected and this endeared him to the female electorates.

DP Ruto : “We have brought to you senator Malala so that you can elect him as our next Kakamega governor. He is a clear definition of our bottoms up economic growth mantra for rising from MCA to senator and then governor after August 9,”

“Malala is a politician who you cannot easily wish away when you are competing against him. He is a serious mobiliser and a linguist. His oratory skills has worked to his good and in this election, he can still pull a fast and succeed governor Oparanya as the next county chief,” said Daniel Nyangweso, Butsotso Central ANC ward rep aspirant.

Nyangweso says Malala has held campaigns in all corners of the county and wherever he has gone, he has received an overwhelming support.

ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi has always liked Malala to a ‘super sub striker’ in a football match and a reliable fighter equivalent to ten men.

And going by today’s events, the maverick senator and Khalwale were able to fill Bukhungu stadium with a mammoth crowd without ferrying anyone in school buses, a clear sign that he is growing into a political supremo in the region.

The rally was attended by Deputy President William Ruto, Mudavadi, Ford Kenya’s Moses Wetang’ula, Alfred Mutua (Machakos Governor), Amason Kingi (Kilifi Governor), Garissa Town MP Aden Duale, Mathira’s Rigathi Gachagua and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.
