Masinde Muliro University mourning the untimely death of an academic genius- Prof John Obiri

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Mmust) is mourning the untimely death of Prof. John Obiri.

Prof. Obiri until his death was the Director at the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies (Graduate School) of the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

“Dear Staff and Students, I have learnt with deep sorrow, this morning, of the demise of Prof. John Obiri. On behalf of the entire MMUST fraternity, we pass our heartfelt condolences to the entire Prof. Obiri’s family. May God comfort us and give us strength to bear the loss. Let us join hands in helping the family physically, emotionally, financially and in prayer,” said Prof. Shibairo

According to one of his friends, the accomplished scholar was duty on Thursday and was in good moods.

“Prof Obiri was on duty on Thursday and left at around 5.30opm in the evening. I was shocked today (Friday) when I received the shocking news that he is dead. The cause of his death is still unknown and we are waiting for postmortem report,” said the Lecturer.

Pauline Muigai, a master’s student he was supervising posted “Rest in eternal peace my supervisor. Great mentor you were Prof Obiri, you guided me through my studies with consistency, just the other day within the week, I met you at the cafeteria. Rest well senior till we meet again,”

The institution’s Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo while announcing the death of the academic scholar described him as a dedicated and humble man who had the interest of many people he interacted with at heart.

On behalf of the entire MMUST fraternity, we pass our heartfelt condolences to the entire Prof. Obiri’s family. May God comfort us and give us strength to bear the loss. His colleagues described him as an academician who was keen at lifting the younger generation and showing them direction to actualise their aspirations.

“Satan, why won’t you leave Mmust alone? When shall you stop killing the good people here? Why won’t you allow them to finish the assignments God gave them? Why are you killing my people” posted Dr Dennis Ochieno while mourning the late professor.

Dr Emmanuel Okenwa posted ” Am mourning, after Prof Fred Otieno, this is another death that has taken toll on me. Why! do good people just have to go and the death takes exactly the same pattern. Go to bed and don’t come back,”.

Dennis Nyongesa on his Facebook account said that it was a very sad day for him after learning the passing on of Prof. Obiri.

“I had an engagement with him hardly a month ago. Death has dealt a cruel blow to his family, friends and the MMUST fraternity. May God comfort all who are hurting,” said Nyongesa.

He graduated with a degree in Natural Resources from the University of Nairobi (UoN) in 1988 and then proceeded to University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa where he graduated with a Master’s degree in the same field in 1997 and then a Doctorate Degree (PhD) in 2022.

The late Professor of Natural Sciences has over two decades of experience in the management of research and development interventions.

He has been involved in leadership and coordination of natural resources, conflict and disaster management, environmental management systems, sustainable development and multi-lateral development partnerships.

He graduated with a degree in Natural Resources from the University of Nairobi (UoN) in 1988 and then proceeded to University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa where he graduated with a Master’s degree in the same field in 1997 and then a Doctorate Degree (PhD) in 2022.

Between 1989 – 1995, he worked at the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and later to the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Centre of Environment & Development (South Africa), between 1997 to 1998, University of Wales, Bangor (United Kingdom) – 2002 to 2006.

He worked at Nature and Development Africa (Kenya) from 2006 to 2007, Chairman – Development of Disaster Management & Sustainable -2014 to 2016 at Mmust and later Director – The Directorate of Postgraduate School from 2017 to date.
