The government has been asked to shelve its plans of popularizing the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and instead focus on cushioning Kenyans from Covid19 pandemic.

“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said that the country will spent Sh14billion on referendum. BBI can wait until the pandemic is over instead of suffocating Kenyans with campaigns that are bringing more harm than the needed unity of purpose,” said Stephen Makokha, a politician from Mumias East Sub County.

Kenyans are of the view that the Sh14billion that is to be spent during the BBI referendum should be channeled to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) and be used for treating Covid19 patients.

Mr. Makokha wants President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga to shelve their plebiscite calls and focus such ambitions by ensuring that the country is free from Covid19.

He told Uhuru to use the Sh14billion meant for referendum and use it treating Covid19 patients, saying as it currently stands, NHIF has suspended treating Covid19 patients using NHIF on grounds that the cover is not sustainable.

“Kenyans are dying like flies and politicians are busy with BBI talks. That’s inhumane. Even in the United States and other developed countries in the world, have shelved their plans for this year and are now focusing on curbing the spread of Covid19. A healthy nation is a wealthy nation,” said Makokha.
